We are pleased to share that, after rediscovering a rare miniature by Jean de Montluçon depicting Saint Luke painting the Virgin, this miniature has joined a Swiss private collection. Jean de Montluçon is an important French painter active in Bourges, France, during the second half of the 15th century. He is known thanks to having signed a Book of Hours, Les Heures de Chappes, now in Paris (Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, ms. 438). Jean de Montluçon had a son, Jacquelin, also known as a painter and illuminator.
Moreover, we are delighted to have spotted at auction another miniature by Jean de Montluçon extract from the same Book of Hours as the Saint Luke painting the Virgin, and we were able to acquire this miniature on behalf of the collector, who now owns these two beautiful miniatures.
We would like to thank Marie Mazzone, who undertook a PhD thesis on Jean et Jacquelin de Montluçon, for her precious help.
