FRENCH ART FROM THE 15TH TO THE 19TH CENTURY: Online exhibition
ONLINE EXHIBITION, ON Artsy
The present exhibition and its viewing room focus on French art and its context. France has been a very fertile soil for artists, since the Middle Ages to today, leading the country to be recognized as one of the most artsy places.
Why were these artworks created? Many factors have been, and still are, behind the high volume and high quality of artistic production: religion, culture, power, passion, to quote only a few. The artists from the 15th-16th century that we present here received commissioned by religious or laymen who wanted to show their piety as well as their status. In the 18th century, he King of France Louis XV hired Carle van Loo as his official painter to enrich lifestyle, show his power and ultimate status. Eugène Boudin, a century later, fell in love with the practice of painting en plein air, which became his drive behind his production as well as the starting point of the Impressionism movement as we know it today.
From the Middle Ages to today, there have always been various reasons for collecting art. Some reasons are fashionable and tend to fade as quickly as they appear, but some other reasons are timeless. The core reasons, however, remains the same: interest, curiosity, compassion and the love for the artists’ works. The thirteen works presented in this exhibition are beautiful witnesses to French Art: they celebrate the timeless mastery, craftsmanship and talent of the artists of our past.
