Little is known about Jacques Saint-Ours, father of the famous artist Jean-Pierre Saint-Ours. He comes from a influential French family settled first in Nyon (1701) and then in Geneva, where he was born. He became an important angraver and painter in Geneva, where is taught drawings lessons, notably to his son Jean-Pierre Saint-Ours. This charming drawing, perhaps by Jacques Saint-Ours, shows the face of a young boy asleep, in profile. The pencil stroke is very careful and legible; of particular note is the delicate treatment of the child's hair, eyes, nose and mouth. The child remains unidentified if it is a portrait and not a preparatory study for a child's figure. The verso bears the annotation "C. Cariotte", perhaps the name of a former owner who also owned a few works now in the Musée d'art et d'histoire (including inv. nos. E 2001 0701 and E 2001-0703). Interestingly, we present here this drawing by Jacques Saint-Ours, two drawings by Jean-Pierre Saint-Ours dans three drawings by Catherine Saint-Ours.
