Michael Johann Schnitzler (Neustadt, 1782 - Munich, 1861) is a German painter who specialized in animals and still life painting. Little is known about the artist, who surely deserves more attention. He studied at the Munich Academy and worked in the city as a court theater painter. He later traveled to Ulm and Stuttgart for work. This exquisite still life with dead birds demonstrates the painter's talent, particularly in the treatment of the birds' feathers, as well as his knowledge of German art history: the impressive wing of the dead duck refers to the Wing of a European Roller made by Albrecht Dürer circa 1500 (Vienna, Albertina).
